The wine

The Wisselbrunnen soils are strongly influenced by quartzite, loess and marl. These components, along with the minerality typical of this vineyard and vinification in large German oak barrels, bring forth herbal notes, fine fruit and a puristic saltiness in this Riesling.

Enclosed by a wall and formerly a monopole, this vineyard in Oestrich is close to the Rhine, right in front of the Spreitzer estate. The wine tantalizes with aromas of ripe peaches; elegant, succulent and fruity on the palate. Excellent ageing potential!

The St. Nikolaus reminds in the bouquet of ripe mirabelle plums, paired with the typical smoke aromas due to the maturing in new oak-wood-woods.
Piece barrels of 1200 litres. Due to the one-year maturing in the bottle, the aromas from the new oak are very well integrated and the typical St. Nikolaus juiciness comes to the fore. The tightrope act between creaminess and elegance in perfection.

Aromas of Sanguine de Savoie peach, vividly fragrant. Enormously succulent on the palate, elegant with complex structure. Rich, powerful and concentrated, yet not too high in alcohol. Vinified in large German oak barrels (2400 liters).

The wine

Measuring in at 300 meters above sea level, this vineyard boasts the highest altitude in the Rheingau. This together with the slate soil lends the wine a distinctive minerality, tight structure and cooling fruit on the palate. Somewhat  sleeker, this wine gets its richness and complexity from vinification in large (2400 liters) and slightly smaller and newer (1200 liters) German oak barrels.

Aromas of mandarin, grapefruit and white peach, with a radiant power and substance make our Charta a Riesling with enormous ageing potential.

Following the example of the famous Rheingau Rieslings of the past centuries, our Charta Riesling is traditionally matured in barrels and carries the nonchalance of great Rieslings. A Riesling vinified for eternity.

Every year, our CHARTA wine bears an artist's label dedicated to an important theme. You will find the respective explanations of the label on the back label, in our price list or in the expert reports.

In honor of our grandfather, we have been vinifying the Oestrich Lenchen Riesling Spätlese »303« since the year 2000. Naturally the grapes come from the very same vineyard where our grandfather harvested his legendary Trockenbeerenauslese, which garnered a record sugar level of 303 degrees Oechsle. Back then those TBA grapes were cultivated in the Eiserberg vineyard in Oestrich, which was consolidated with the Oestrich Lenchen vineyard in 1971. The Eiserberg slopes to the west, profiting from the afternoon sun. The soil is high in iron, interspersed with loam, loess, red slate and quartzite, resulting in delicately fruity wines, rich and high in extracts. Slate and quartzite confer an exciting minerality on the wine, providing the best constituents for a complex, balanced, sweet wine like our »303«!

Our ice wine from the Würzgarten VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is harvested at a temperature of at least -8 degrees Celsius. Due to its high location at the foot of the Taunus, cold air regularly flows into the Würzgarten during winter. The small vineyard is therefore ideally suited for ice wine harvesting.

Hints of white pepper in combination with intense fruit aromas of pear, quince and apple. A subtle spiciness paired with soft acidity and creaminess round off the taste.

In our search for the perfect location and the ideal grapes, we decided on a plot in the upper Doosberg on the border with the Hallgartener Jungfer. We have always called this vineyard "Grenzstein", as it lies directly on the sandstone boundary stone. The special thing about the terroir of this site is the combination of quartzite veins, coming from the
Hallgarter Zange, and the calcareous soil, which is extremely valuable for Burgundy vines. After long and intensive care of the young vines, we have now been able to harvest the first Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grapes. We have created an elegant cuvée from the two Burgundy varieties.
